Artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing nearly every business operation globally. Freshfields leads the way in this transformative era, providing guidance to clients across industries, including tech, media, financial services, private capital, life sciences, energy, consumer goods and manufacturing.
We specialize in advising on multi-jurisdictional AI governance, antitrust and regulatory compliance and investigations, tech collaborations, and acquisitions of AI technology. Clients appreciate Freshfields' comprehensive global and multidisciplinary approach, which leverages the expertise of leading regulatory, data privacy, antitrust, cyber, M&A, investigations, IP, litigation, and employment law specialists. This collective knowledge helps navigate the risks associated with AI and capitalize on the opportunities.
Recent client successes include:
Advising on LSEG’s groundbreaking 10-year strategic partnership with Microsoft for their next generation AI and cloud infrastructure solution. Freshfields won at The Lawyer Awards, the Legal Business Awards and the FT Innovative Lawyer Europe Awards for this work.
Advising on impact of, and compliance with, global AI regulations on a leading AI company’s generative AI model development and product initiatives.
Engaging with the data protection regulators in the EU, and advising on the implications of the AI Act, in relation to various AI use cases to facilitate the processing of health insurance claims.
Negotiating a collaboration with, investments in, and an option to acquire a global AI-based health assessment platform, involving extensive IP allocation and copyright licensing issues.
Advising on its AI use case strategies, including chatbot disclosure requirements in key markets, governance relating to high-risk AI use cases, and IP issues relating to AI-generated marketing content.
We are active participants in the AI community; our Brussels Public Affairs team is part of the EU debate on AI (and other tech) regulation. We have recently co-led discussions at a roundtable with Axel Voss, MEP, who is one of the lead negotiators of the AI Act and the AI Liability Directive. We are one of the founding members of the UK’s City of London Law Society AI and Data Committees and are regular speakers on AI in the US, the UK, Europe, and Asia. Freshfields’ integrated cross-practice AI expertise and reach uniquely positions us to provide global advice on your business-critical AI matters.
