Germany Toilet Paper Exports
Toilet paper exports from Germany declined to 162K tons in 2023, waning by -12.2% against the year before. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 222K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, toilet paper exports amounted to $412M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country
the Netherlands (49K tons) was the main destination for toilet paper exports from Germany, with a 30% share of total exports. Moreover, toilet paper exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (23K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (17K tons), with an 11% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands stood at +2.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+2.3% per year) and France (+6.1% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($111M), Belgium ($56M) and Austria ($52M) were the largest markets for toilet paper exported from Germany worldwide, with a combined 53% share of total exports. France, Poland, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
France, with a CAGR of +9.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the toilet paper price stood at $2,548 per ton (FOB, Germany), increasing by 20% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Austria ($3,400 per ton) and the Czech Republic ($2,885 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($2,276 per ton) and the UK ($2,320 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
