Cumbernauld Theater Trust has announced that the first production to be staged by the Cumbernauld Theater Company in its new home at the Lanternhouse will be Romeo and Juliet.

Located on the Cumbernauld Academy campus, the new ultramodern venue houses two performance venues: a 300-seat auditorium and a studio theater. It also has a dance studio, an 84-seat cinema and a café / bistro.

One of the most famous and classic stories of all time, this 21st century version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a reminder that acts of love and sacrifice can bring hope and change in the face of darkness.

This new interpretation, conceived by an exceptional creative team and directed by award-winning director Kate Nelson, imagines Verona as a walled and closed city; where citizens are denied the freedom to choose who they love and how they live and where their destinies are dictated by those at the ‘top’.

Physically charged and energetic, the production is an urgent and powerful retelling of the timeless story that follows the fate of Romeo, Mercutio, Benvolio, Tybalt, Juliet and Paris and the tragedy that follows when Romeo and Juliet are denied freedom. to love each other. other.
