News: Washington and DC area theaters unite to expand vaccination proof and masks

The commitment

Theaters in the greater Washington, DC area have come together to provide the highest level of public safety for their audiences, performers, staff and volunteers, by requiring their audience to provide proof of vaccination to attend all live public performances in their indoor venues.

These theaters are committed to the safety of all who work, perform and visit their venues, and invite the public to join the effort to slow the spread of Covid-19. In addition to the audience, these theaters have compulsory Covid-19 vaccinations for artists and theater staff.

Organizations joining this effort are listed below. Other theaters are expected to join this group as they reopen. Organizations will update their own websites as appropriate, please use the links to theater websites for the most up-to-date information.

Watch a show

Customers must be able to show proof that they are fully immunized (refer to specific theater policies for requirements) upon entering theaters. The policies will continue to be reviewed regularly by aligned sites, including a full update by March 31, 2022. Masks will also be required for audiences inside the theater except for eating or drinking in designated areas.

Customers can display proof of vaccination with a physical copy of their vaccination card along with their ID, and theaters may offer other options for providing proof of vaccination, as listed on their websites.

Theaters will offer exemptions for those who are not vaccinated, such as children who are recently or not yet eligible, people with certain medical conditions that prevent vaccination, or those with narrow religious beliefs. These patrons must provide proof of a negative Covid-19 test in a timely manner – as defined by each venue – prior to the performance start time.
