School board approves new conservatory of visual and performing arts in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (WAFB) – The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board voted unanimously Thursday night to convert the former Broadmoor Middle School site into a dedicated conservatory.

A conservatory is a school specifically dedicated to the visual and performing arts.

The veranda model will be the first of its kind in Baton Rouge.

The school is expected to serve students in Grades 6 to 12 once fully enrolled.

East Baton Rouge Parish School officials predict that the school will open for the 2023-2024 school year.

Item on the council’s agenda:

Consideration of an application for approval to reopen the former site of Broadmoor Middle School as a conservatory school serving students in grades 6 to 12. Strategic alignment: student performance.

East Baton Rouge Schools about the project:

“Placing this unique form of school curriculum would enhance the district’s current offerings within the school portfolio. A conservatory school would be the first of its kind in the metropolitan area and would provide families with an additional choice for high quality seating educational opportunities within our school system. In collaboration with the district fine arts department and Magnet programs, the district intends to implement a priority zone that reflects a component of the previous and historic attendance zone of the former school site. Broadmoor Intermediate. Specific details of attendance and proximity areas will be brought back for council approval at a later date. “
